Freelancer Teardown: What a 3-Month Engagement Actually Costs
The real line-items behind a $2k/month retainer, and where founders overpay

What the invoice looked like
$6,000 over three months. One line: "Meta Ads management." No hours, no deliverables, no scope. This is the default in the market and it is why founders churn out of freelancer relationships every 90 days.
The 11 line-items that should be on it
- Account audit and baseline (one-time, week 1)
- Tracking verification: pixel, CAPI, GA4, server events
- Campaign restructure or new build
- Creative brief writing (per concept)
- Creative production oversight (not production itself)
- Weekly optimisation cycles: budget, bids, exclusions
- Landing page CRO feedback
- Reporting cadence: weekly dashboard, monthly review
- Founder syncs: 30 min biweekly minimum
- Ad hoc: creative fatigue rescue, spike response
- Documentation: SOPs, handover notes if the engagement ends
Where founders overpay
- Paying management fees on ad spend they cannot actually deploy. A $500/day budget cap on a $2k/month retainer is 15% of spend, fine. On a $300/day cap it is 22% and the freelancer is the highest ROAS line in your P&L.
- Paying for "creative strategy" without creative production. Briefs without a production partner become PDFs, not ads.
- Paying for reports the founder never opens. Ask what decisions the report drives. If none, cut it.
