What Is Ad Recall Lift (Estimated Ad Recall Lift)?

Ad Recall Lift (Meta reports it as Estimated Ad Recall Lift) is a modelled estimate of how many additional people would remember seeing your ad if asked within two days. It is Meta's brand-awareness proxy, built from a survey model rather than a direct measurement, and it only appears on campaigns using the Awareness objective.

    Formula

Estimated Ad Recall Lift Rate = Estimated Ad Recall Lift (people) ÷ Reach

Meta reports both the raw people count and the rate. The rate is the useful one because it is reach-normalised: a big number on a huge reach can still be a weak campaign. Cost per Estimated Ad Recall Lift (people) = spend ÷ lift, and that is the figure to compare across creatives.

    Worked example

A Dhaka retail brand spends $1,200 on an Awareness campaign, reaches 480,000 people and Meta reports 38,400 estimated ad recall lift. The lift rate is 38,400 ÷ 480,000 = 8%. Cost per lifted person is $1,200 ÷ 38,400 = $0.031. A second creative in the same campaign hits 11% at $0.022, so the budget shifts there even though both had identical reach.

    Benchmarks

    • Video-first Awareness campaigns: 6% to 12% lift rate is the normal band.
    • Static image Awareness campaigns: 3% to 7%, recall builds slower without motion.
    • Cost per lifted person, South Asia including Bangladesh: roughly $0.01 to $0.05.
    • Cost per lifted person, US and Western Europe: roughly $0.05 to $0.20 on the same setup.
    • Below 3% lift rate on video usually means the first two seconds are not landing.
Meta's own documentation states the metric is modelled from polling of a sample of people who were and were not shown the ad, then extrapolated. It is an estimate, not a count, and Meta only serves it once a campaign clears a minimum reach threshold.

    Why it matters

For brands running awareness alongside performance, recall lift is the only in-platform signal that a top-of-funnel budget did anything. It is also the cheapest early-warning system for creative fatigue: recall rate decays before CTR and CPM move. Treat it as a creative-ranking tool inside one campaign, never as a cross-account KPI.

    Common mistakes

    • 1.Reading the raw people count instead of the rate. Reach drives the count, so the count rewards spend, not creative quality.
    • 2.Comparing recall lift across countries. Survey response behaviour and auction density differ, so a Bangladesh number and a US number are not the same scale.
    • 3.Expecting recall lift on conversion campaigns. Meta only models it for Awareness objective delivery.
    • 4.Treating it as measured brand lift. A proper Brand Lift Study runs a holdout; recall lift is a model output with no control group of your own.
    • 5.Optimising recall lift while sales fall. Recall is a leading indicator at best, pair it with MER so awareness spend stays accountable.

    FAQs about Ad Recall Lift

What is Estimated Ad Recall Lift in Meta Ads?

It is a modelled estimate of the number of extra people who would remember your ad if asked within two days of seeing it. Meta builds it from survey polling of exposed and unexposed users, then extrapolates to your full reach.

What is a good ad recall lift rate?

For video-led Awareness campaigns, 6% to 12% is the normal band. Static creative typically lands at 3% to 7%. Anything under 3% on video usually points at a weak opening two seconds rather than a targeting problem.

How do I calculate ad recall lift rate?

Divide Estimated Ad Recall Lift (people) by Reach. For cost efficiency, divide spend by Estimated Ad Recall Lift (people) to get cost per lifted person, which is the fairer way to rank creatives.

Why is ad recall lift not showing in my Ads Manager?

The metric only appears on Awareness objective campaigns, and only after the campaign clears Meta's minimum reach threshold. Conversion and traffic campaigns will never report it.

Is ad recall lift the same as a Brand Lift Study?

No. A Brand Lift Study uses a real holdout group and measures stated recall or awareness directly. Ad recall lift is a model estimate with no holdout of your own, so it is directionally useful but not proof of incremental brand impact.

Should I optimise campaigns for ad recall lift?

Use it to rank creatives inside a single awareness campaign, not as an account KPI. If recall rises while blended MER falls, the awareness budget is not paying back and should be reallocated.
