    What Is Auto-Bidding?

Auto-bidding is a set of Google Ads strategies where the platform sets individual auction bids in real time using its conversion data. The main options are Maximize Conversions, Maximize Conversion Value, Target CPA, and Target ROAS. Manual CPC and Enhanced CPC are the non-auto alternatives, still available but rare in modern accounts.

    Formula

Effective Bid = Base Bid × Contextual Signal Multipliers (device, time, query intent, audience, location)

Google does not publish the multipliers. What matters operationally: auto-bidding needs a conversion signal it trusts. Without ~30 conversions in the last 30 days per campaign, Target CPA and Target ROAS misfire because the model has no basis to price the auction.

    Worked example

An ecommerce account switches a Search campaign from Manual CPC ($0.85 average CPC) to Target ROAS at 400%. Week one: spend drops 40% because Google can't hit 4× ROAS at the old query volume. Week three: spend recovers as the model learns which queries convert at what value, average CPC settles at $1.10 but ROAS lands at 4.2×. Net revenue up 18% on similar spend. That three-week dip is the learning cost that founders panic on and revert too early.

    Benchmarks

    • Learning period: 1 to 2 weeks minimum for Target CPA/ROAS to stabilise.
    • Conversion volume threshold: 30 per 30 days is Google's recommended floor; below that, use Maximize Conversions with no target.
    • Realistic Target CPA: within ±20% of your historical CPA; more aggressive targets suppress delivery.
    • PMax and Demand Gen: auto-bidding only, no manual option.
Google's own Smart Bidding documentation states advertisers who switch from manual to Target CPA see an average 20% lift in conversions at the same or lower CPA, measured across accounts with sufficient conversion history.

    Why it matters

Auto-bidding is the default because Google's real-time signals (query, device, time, audience) are impossible to replicate at manual bid-adjustment level. But it only works when the conversion feed is clean and volumes are sufficient. Feed junk conversions (all form fills, not qualified leads) and the algorithm optimises toward junk.

    Common mistakes

    • 1.Setting a Target CPA far below historical CPA; the campaign throttles delivery and spend collapses.
    • 2.Switching bid strategies every 5 days; each change restarts the learning phase and burns budget.
    • 3.Optimising toward soft conversions (page views, add-to-cart) instead of the money event.
    • 4.Running Target ROAS on lead-gen without offline conversion imports; the model can't see close rates.

    FAQs about Auto-Bidding

Which auto-bidding strategy should I start with?

For ecommerce with revenue tracking: Maximize Conversion Value, then move to Target ROAS after 4 weeks. For lead-gen: Maximize Conversions, then Target CPA once you have 30+ conversions per month.

Why did my spend drop after switching to Target CPA?

The target is likely below the auction-clearing price. Raise the target 15% to 20%, let the campaign relearn for 2 weeks, then tighten.

Can I still use Manual CPC?

Yes on Search, Display, and Shopping. But most modern accounts use it only for tiny brand-defence campaigns where signal volume is too low for the algorithm to help.

Does auto-bidding work on new campaigns with no history?

Use Maximize Conversions first (no target). It gathers data faster than a target-based strategy because there is no cap on what it can bid to win conversions.

Do PMax and Demand Gen use auto-bidding?

Only. Both require Maximize Conversions, Maximize Conversion Value, Target CPA, or Target ROAS; no manual option exists.
