    What Is Bumper Ad?

A bumper ad is a non-skippable 6-second YouTube video ad sold on a CPM basis. It runs before, during, or after other YouTube videos and is optimised for reach and unaided recall, not clicks or conversions. Because the viewer cannot skip, the whole message has to land in 6 seconds of picture and sound.

    Formula

    Bumper CPM = (Ad Spend ÷ Impressions) × 1000

Bumpers are bought on impressions, not views (they are considered fully viewed by design). Compare them to TrueView on cost per completed view, and to Meta Reels on incremental reach.

    Worked example

A Dhaka DTC brand launches a new SKU and runs a 6-second bumper across YouTube Shorts and standard inventory for two weeks at a $4.50 CPM. 2.1 million impressions land 380,000 unique viewers with an average frequency of 5.5. Brand-search queries lift 22 percent versus the trailing 4 weeks. The bumper did not drive direct sales, but it moved the top of the funnel enough that the retargeting layer converted at a lower CPA the following month.

    Benchmarks

    • Bumper CPM in South Asia: typically $2 to $6 depending on placement mix and audience.
    • Bumper CPM in North America and Western Europe: typically $6 to $14.
    • Optimal frequency for recall lift: 4 to 6 exposures per unique viewer inside a 4-week window.
    • Recall lift on well-branded 6-second creative: 20 percent to 30 percent absolute lift is common on Google Brand Lift studies.
Google's own Brand Lift benchmarks report that 9 of 10 bumper ads studied drove a significant lift in ad recall, with a median lift of over 30 percent.

    Why it matters

Bumper ads are the cheapest way to buy incremental reach on YouTube without depending on skip behaviour. In a full-funnel plan they play the same role as OOH or radio spots: pure top-of-funnel priming that makes the lower funnel cheaper. Treated as a conversion channel they always disappoint.

    Common mistakes

    • 1.Judging bumpers on clicks or last-click conversions instead of reach, frequency, and brand-search lift.
    • 2.Cramming a 30-second script into 6 seconds; the ad ends before the brand lands.
    • 3.Running bumpers without any retargeting or search layer to catch the demand they create.
    • 4.Setting a frequency cap of 1 or 2, viewers do not remember a brand they saw once.

    FAQs about Bumper Ad

Can I use bumper ads for conversions?

Not directly. Bumpers are a reach and recall format. If a bumper is your only YouTube layer, pair it with a search or retargeting campaign that catches the intent it primes.

How long should a bumper ad be?

Six seconds, no more. YouTube will reject anything longer and there is no version of the format that allows a 7 or 8 second cut.

Bumper vs TrueView, which one wins?

Different jobs. TrueView is skippable and priced on completed views, so it filters for interest. Bumpers are non-skippable and priced on impressions, so they deliver reach. Most healthy YouTube plans run both.

What frequency cap should I use?

Cap at 3 to 4 exposures per week per user for a 4 week flight. That lands the 4 to 6 total exposures that Google's own studies associate with strong recall lift.

Do bumpers work on YouTube Shorts?

Yes, YouTube serves bumpers across Shorts inventory as part of the standard Video reach campaign. Vertical, sound-off-first creative performs best in that placement.
