    What Is Dark Post?

A dark post is an unpublished page post used only as a paid ad. It never appears on the Facebook or Instagram feed of the page's organic followers, so the page grid stays clean while dozens or hundreds of ad variants run in the auction. Almost every scaled Meta account uses dark posts by default; only awareness or reach campaigns typically boost published posts.

    Worked example

A DTC skincare brand tests 12 creative variants against 3 audiences in a single week. If each of those 36 combinations were a published page post, the brand's Instagram grid would be unusable. Instead, every ad is a dark post created inside Ads Manager. Followers see only the 3 organic posts the brand chose to publish that week; the auction sees all 36 variants.

    Benchmarks

    • Share of Meta spend that runs on dark posts in scaled accounts: routinely 90 percent or more.
    • Number of creative variants a mid-market account has live at any time: 20 to 80 (nearly all dark).
    • Time cost of using published posts instead of dark posts: hours of grid cleanup per week plus follower confusion.
Meta's own creative testing documentation and Advantage+ Shopping playbook explicitly recommend using ad-level (dark) posts for testing to avoid cluttering the page and to enable independent iteration.

    Why it matters

Dark posts are what make modern Meta buying possible. Without them, running the volume of creative variants the algorithm needs would either destroy the page grid or force operators back to a 1990s-style 'one hero ad' approach that leaves scale on the table.

    Common mistakes

    • 1.Boosting an existing published post when the goal is testing; you cannot cleanly iterate on a live organic post.
    • 2.Losing track of which dark post carries which social proof (likes/comments); use post-ID targeting to consolidate engagement onto the winning variants.
    • 3.Assuming a dark post is 'private', it is a real ad visible to anyone Meta serves it to, and it can be reported and screenshotted just like any other post.
    • 4.Not archiving winning dark posts, they still contain valuable social proof to reuse in the next campaign.

    FAQs about Dark Post

Are dark posts hidden from Facebook?

They are hidden from your page's public timeline and follower feed, but they are visible to any user Meta delivers them to as an ad, and to anyone with the post URL.

How do I create a dark post?

Inside Ads Manager, at the ad level, choose 'Create ad' rather than 'Use existing post'. The resulting post lives on your page in unpublished form and only serves as a paid ad.

Do dark posts hurt organic reach?

No. They do not appear in the organic algorithm at all and do not compete with published posts for follower feed slots.
