Attribution

    What Is Data-Driven Attribution (DDA)?

Data-Driven Attribution (DDA) is Google Ads' machine-learning attribution model that assigns fractional conversion credit to every touchpoint in a converting path based on how much each one actually influenced the outcome. Since 2021 it is the default model for new Google Ads accounts and replaced last-click as Google's recommended standard.

    DDA vs last-click, worked

A shopper searches 'best crm for agencies', clicks a display ad, comes back a week later via a branded search ad, and converts. Last-click gives 100 percent credit to the branded search ad. DDA might give the display ad 0.35 credit, generic search 0.25, and branded 0.40. Reported CPA on the display campaign drops from 'infinite' to reasonable, which unlocks scaling budget that last-click would have starved.

    Benchmarks

    • Minimum data needed: Google states 300 conversions and 3,000 ad interactions in 30 days at the account level.
    • Typical shift after switching from last-click to DDA: upper-funnel campaigns (Display, PMax, YouTube) gain 20 to 40 percent credit.
    • tCPA / tROAS bidding accuracy improves within 2 to 4 weeks of DDA + Enhanced Conversions.

    Why it matters

Last-click systematically over-rewards branded search and retargeting and under-rewards everything upstream that generated the demand. Left on last-click, most accounts throttle the campaigns that actually drive incremental sales. DDA is Google's best in-platform attempt to fix that, and it is now the price of entry for smart bidding to work well.

    Common mistakes

    • 1.Switching to DDA without hitting the data threshold. Below 300 conversions a month, DDA falls back and results wobble.
    • 2.Comparing DDA numbers to last-click numbers as if they are the same metric. They are not; expect campaign-level shifts.
    • 3.Assuming DDA is incrementality. It is credit allocation across observed touchpoints, not causal lift. Run holdouts for causality.
    • 4.Ignoring Enhanced Conversions. DDA on a broken conversion feed learns the wrong lessons.

    FAQs about Data-Driven Attribution

Is Data-Driven Attribution better than last-click?

For accounts with enough data (300+ monthly conversions), almost always yes. It reveals upper-funnel campaigns that last-click hides and lets smart bidding optimise on realistic credit.

    Does DDA measure incrementality?

No. DDA distributes credit across the touchpoints that were observed in converting paths. It cannot tell you which of those conversions would have happened anyway. Use geo holdouts or conversion lift studies for that.

Why did my branded search CPA go up after switching to DDA?

Because DDA moved credit away from the last click. The total conversions did not change; the accounting did. Judge the account at MER or blended CPA level after the switch, not campaign by campaign.

    Does DDA work with GA4?

Yes. GA4 uses DDA by default too, and you can import GA4 conversions into Google Ads. Keep the attribution model consistent across the two.
