    What Is View-Through Conversion (VTC)?

A view-through conversion is a conversion counted when a user saw your ad (an impression, not a click) and then converted within the platform's view attribution window (typically 1 day). Platforms count them because view-through captures upper-funnel influence that last-click misses; critics count them warily because a rendered impression is a very weak signal that the ad actually caused the sale.

    The view-through trap

A brand runs a $20,000 retargeting campaign on Meta. Reported ROAS with 7-day-click + 1-day-view: 6.8x. Reported ROAS with 7-day-click only: 3.2x. A geo holdout run the same quarter shows incremental ROAS around 2.5x. Half of the reported 6.8x was view-through on users who were already going to buy. The campaign is still profitable, but not at the scale the reported number suggested.

    Benchmarks

    • Retargeting campaigns: view-through often accounts for 30 to 50 percent of reported conversions. Treat with heavy skepticism.
    • Cold prospecting: view-through commonly adds 10 to 20 percent; more defensible because these users had no prior intent.
    • YouTube in-stream: view-through (Engaged-View Conversions) is a first-class signal because a 10-second engaged view is stronger than a fleeting feed impression.
A Google study found view-through conversions inflate reported performance by 12-30% on average across YouTube and Display, with heaviest inflation on retargeting placements.

    Why it matters

View-through is the biggest source of ROAS inflation on retargeting and Advantage+ Shopping campaigns. Cutting spend without adjusting for view-through can crash real revenue; scaling based on view-through-inflated ROAS can burn budget. The rule of thumb: use click-only attribution as your decision metric, keep view-through as a directional secondary.

    Common mistakes

    • 1.Comparing view-through ROAS across Meta, Google and TikTok. Definitions differ; the comparison is meaningless.
    • 2.Judging retargeting on view-through-included ROAS. That is where the inflation is worst.
    • 3.Turning off view-through entirely on prospecting. You lose real upper-funnel signal.
    • 4.Confusing view-through with brand lift. They measure different things.

    FAQs about View-Through Conversion

Should I turn off view-through conversions?

No. Add a second column in Ads Manager for click-only ROAS and make that your primary decision metric; keep view-through visible as a secondary signal for prospecting.

How long is the view-through window?

1 day on Meta by default. Google YouTube allows up to 30 days for Engaged-View Conversions. Longer windows inflate numbers more; shorter windows are closer to real influence.

    Are view-through conversions real?

Some are, some are not. On cold prospecting they capture legitimate upper-funnel influence; on retargeting they mostly capture people who were already going to buy. Incrementality tests are the only way to know for sure.

    Does Google Ads count view-through?

Yes, mostly on the Display Network and YouTube. Search does not have view-through in the same sense because impressions on a search page are already high-intent.
